First Impressions Index - Nine Roads Into Ilkeston

There are now nine roads by which traffic can enter Ilkeston and this series will show some of the views and sights to be seen when approaching the town from each of them in turn. Perhaps a dull day in January is not the best time to start but these are some of the first impressions a new visitor would receive on approaching the town. A tenth vehicular access through Hallam Fields is a private road and since the closure of the Stanton Ironworks it is not possible for the general public to reach the town via this route. There are of course several other routes by which the town can be reached on foot but in this series we shall be concentrating on the main roads and looking at each in some detail. Starting in the east and progressing in a clockwise direction we shall begin each route just outside the Ilkeston boundary and head towards the town centre. The new link road from the Awsworth Bypass was opened in December 2008 so it's as good a place as any to make a start.
