First Impressions
No. 04 - Quarry Hill Road
w/e 24 November 2019
All of this week's pictures were taken with a Kodak DX6490

Although this fourth route into Ilkeston in the First Impressions series is titled Quarry Hill Road, we're actually beginning on Low's Lane in an area known as New Stanton which will also be the start of the fifth route.

Twelve Houses

The fifth route will continue straight ahead from Low's Lane past Twelve Houses into Sowbrook Lane and on to Kirk Hallam but for this part we follow the road round to the right were it becomes Ilkeston Road.
Ilkeston Road

Ilkeston Road falls gently downhill for about a quarter of a mile.
Stanton Bridge

At this point we still haven't reached the Ilkeston boundary and are still in the parish of Stanton By Dale but it's worth pausing by the Stanton Bridge over the disused Nutbrook Canal and at the foot of the former railway bridge for a quick look around.
Fishing Club Pond

On the right is a pond which is home to members of the Stanton Fishing Club.
Nutbook Canal

The pond is connected to the now disused Nutbrook Canal and it is the canal bridsge that is called Stanton Bridge (i.e not the railway bridge).

Canal Path

Access can also be gained here to a footpath alongside the canal but access to the 11 mile route from Long Eaton to Heanor that is the Nutbrook Trail is from the other side of the railway bridge. The Trail actually follows the route of the dismantled railway under the bridge.
Quarry Hill Road

Continuing over the former railway bridge, it is only when we drop down on the other side that Ilkeston Road changes to Quarry Hill Road and enters Ilkeston. The Nutbrook Trail access can be seen on the right in the dip.
Merlin Way Junction

The first road on the right is Merlin Way which leads into the Quarry Hill Industrial Park and through to Crompton Road at Hallam Fields. The road ahead has recently been widened to create an entrance into Elka Road and a new housing estate that is currently in the course of construction.
Steep Hill

Quarry Hill Road now reaches its steepest point and rises to a high point at its junction with Longmoor Lane.
Bull's Head

From that high point the road drops down again to the Bull's Head pub to join Little Hallam Hill, the A6096 from Derby which will be the sixth route in this series. We first need to follow Route 5 though from Twelve Houses through Kirk Hallam to other junctions with the A6096.
