Ilkeston - Spring Flowers
w/e 28 February 2021
All of this week's
pictures were taken with a Kodak DX6490
Spring flowers have made their presence felt this week although
the daffodils outside the Victoria Park Leisure Centre have yet
to bloom.
|
If you know where to look in Victoria Park there are still snowdrops
to be found.
|
But it's the crocuses in the park seen here against a backdrop
of the Bowls Pavilion that are attracting most attention.
|
As usual the crocuses spread all the way along the edge of the
park down Bristol Road and I'm sure many motorists drive this
way just to see them.
|
Not as abundant but equally attractive are those flowering at
the entrance to Chaucer Junior School and they will soon be followed
by the array of daffodils nearer the building.
|
There's a circle of purple flowering crocuses like a fairy ring
in the Garden of Remembrance at the Market Place.
|
And the tubs in the Market Place are also colouring up with primulas
as too is the semi-circular bed in the Lower Market.
|
Another good display of crocuses can be seen on Chaucer Old Park
and from this position on Cantelupe Road it's easy to understand
how it came to be known as 'Illy 'Oleys after the hills and holes
created by mineral extraction many years ago.
|
But the pièce de résistance this year has to be
in Stanton Road Cemetery where the grounds at the far end are
literally carpeted with crocuses. With the Giant standing in
the background (left of the big tree) The Promise of a couple of weeks ago has
been fulfilled in spades.
|
Crocuses, so good they deserve a second photo and with this closer
view of the ground cover in the cemetery what more is there to
say except perhaps this David Steindl-Rast quote -
A single crocus blossom ought to be enough to convince
our heart that springtime, no matter how predictable, is somehow
a gift, gratuitous, gratis, a grace.
