Ilkeston - A Week To Remember
w/e 10 November 2024
All of this week's pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300

November is a month of remembrance. Towards the end of the month we'll remember the start of Advent and the Christmas season with the switching on of the Christmas lights in the town centre. Earlier this week - "Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot" - we remembered Guy Fawkes and his plan to blow up Parliament in 1605. And this week in particular, as we approach Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, we've been remembering all those who gave their lives in two World Wars and other conflicts. The Ilkeston Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) have organised several events during the week at various locations around the town, with pupils from local schools to partake in short services with wreath laying.

Park Cemetery

On the Tuesday the 5th November, there was a service at the War Memorial in Park Cemetery with students from Chaucer Junior and Granby Schools.
Poppy Wreathes

Crosses and poppy wreathes were laid around the foot of the memorial.
The Stute

On Wednesday the 6th, the location was the Ilkeston Rugby Club at The Stute on Hallam Fields Road where Hallam Fields Junior pupils remembered those from the Hallam Fields area of the town who had died in the wars.
Hallam Fields Memorial

Here too, crosses and wreathes were laid at the memorial.
Stanton Road Cemetery

It was also on the 6th an hour later that pupils from Kensington Junior and St Thomas Junior Schools met to join in another short service in the Stanton Road Cemetery.
Wreath Laying

There is no war memorial as such at Stanton Road but two wreathes were placed at the entrance sign and crosses laid at all of
the five Commonwealth War Graves which are situated at various points in the cemetery.
Memorial Garden

On the 7th, it was youngsters from the Cantelupe Centre who joined the RBL service at the WW2 Memorial in the Memorial Garden at the side of St Mary's Church in the Market Place.
Cantelupe Youngsters

The children here were few in number but they are never too young to learn respect for those who have gone before and attendance at events such as this will stand them in good stead for later life and ensure that "We Will Remember Them" for generations still to come.

Remembrance Sunday

The main event in the town took place on the 10th, Remembrance Sunday where, as usual, the population came out in force to pay their respects.
Market Place

The Royal British Legion and schoolchildren were joined on the Market Place by uniformed groups, civic dignitaries, clergy and the general population to honour the fallen. And there's still another service to go around the War Memorial; tomorrow at 11 o'clock on Armistice Day, November 11th - but that's another week.
