Ilkeston - Folk Day Plus ...
w/e 16 June 2024
All of this week's
pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300

Saturday June 15th was Folk Day at the Erewash Museum, the second
of a two day event that also featured a Well Dressing demonstration.
On Friday when we arrived at the museum we were greeted with
a display of knitted and crocheted flowers which were part of
a previous Floral Project by the Social Stitch group for a "Yarns
of Valour" exhibition for D Day.
|

The ramp up to the museum door was also decorated as part of
the exhibition.
|

The main event of Friday though was a demonstration of the art
of well dressing and photos of previously completed dressings
were on display. This demonstration and display was situated
in the forecourt just inside the museum entrance.
|

A special well dressing for the two day event was being created
with various natural products being pressed into the clay base
to create a picture.
|

On Saturday morning work continued on the well dressing but it
had been moved to the courtyard between the main museum building
and the Hay Loft. Here too was another display of the Social
Stitch groups work.
|

Saturday was mainly about local folk traditions but sadly the
British summer weather put a damper - literally - on the event
on Saturday morning. The rainfall put paid to any events taking
place on the wet lawn. It did clear up a little later but we
had left the museum by then.
|

Instead of dancing on the lawn, members of Makeney Morris were
seeking shelter and refreshment inside the museum.
|

That's where we spent a little time talking to this gentleman
with his costume which he informed us was fairly new and was
the Awsworth Spring Horse.
|

We also took the opportunity whilst in the museum to se the 6ft
Crocheted Soldier in the Lally Gallery in an exhibition also
featuring unseen photographs of local service people from various
conflicts. The soldier was created by the Crochet Queen, Jilly
Crofts and donated to the museum after standing in the churchyard
at Stanley Common to mark Remembrance Day.

The Crocheted Soldier will shortly be moved
to a permanent position the War Room in the museum when the present
exhibition is replaced with another, but on Saturday he stood
overlooking the Red Lion Folk Band who were playing to entertain
the visitors. There were many other groups and entertainments
scheduled for the day - it's just a pity the weather was against
it.
