Marlpool - Prelude To Lunch
w/e 14 April 2024
All of this week's
pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300
At one time of day the Erewash
Valley between Ilkeston and Heanor was dotted with small settlemants,
hamlets and villages but most of these have now been swallowed
up by the urban spread of their bigger neighbours. The names
of these smaller settlements still remain although the boundaries
are now largely indistinct. One sunch village, Marlpool on the
edge of Heanor, straddles the main road between the two larger
towns.
Anyone using that main road from Ilkeston will pass through Shipley
and enter Heanor at Marlpool and many of the buildings like the
Queens Head pub on Breach Road will be a familiar sight.
|
So too will be All Saints Church which stands a little further
along Ilkeston Road.
|
Next to the church is Marlpool Rec with a children's play area,
swings and a large open space.
|
On the other side of the road and a little further along is a
long tree lined drive leading to Heanor Cemetery. As I said the
boundaries are indistinct these days. Beyond the cemetery and
for much of the land to the southeast of the Ilkeston Road, the
land is filled mostly with housing to the edge of Shipley Country
Park.
|
The older part of the village of Marlpool lies on the other side
of Ilkeston Road where the hill drops down to Langley, another
small area swallowed up into its larger neighbour, and the Erewash
Valley. Typical of the older buildings in this area is the Marlpool
Infants School on the corner of Prospect Street and East Street.
|
A little further down Breach Road and the hill towards Langley
is Marlpool Junior School on Clara Mount Road.
|
Even further down Breach Road and almost in Langley is the Derby
Pentecostal Church.
|
But returning almost to the top of Breach Road and turning into
Chapel Street we find yet another church. For many years a chapel
dating from the 1820s stood here at the side of the road but
when that was demolished it was replaced by Marlpool United Reformed
Church which opened its new premises in 2004.
|
Just around the corner from the URC on the corner of Gillott
Street and Ilkeston Road is the Mundy Arms, the first building
in Marlpool when approaching from Ilkeston. The boundary here
between Marlpool and Shipley is definite!
|
A sign outside the Mundy Arms reads "A
warm welcome, generous servings and great every day value"
and with Classic Fish and Chips, Chicken Tikka Masala and Scapi
and Chips on the menu it would be rude not to sample its wares
as we met up with family for lunch.
