Ilkeston - Remembrance
w/e 12 November 2023
All of this week's
pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300.

Services have been held at various war memorials during the week
and poppy symbols have been displayed and erected throughout
out town as Remembrance Sunday drew closer. These few images
show some of the scenes from just three days during the week.

Gates and railings at the Erewash Museum were festooned with
crocheted and knitted poppies and more adorned the grounds and
other features in the garden.

On Saturday, Armistice Day, a small crowd gathered with veterans
and cadets for a short service and wreath laying around the Cenotaph
on the Market Place.
|

Despite the Saturday market being held there was an impeccably
observed silence at 11 o'clock to honour and remember all those
who had made the ultimate sacrifice in two Word Wars and other
conflicts
which continue to this day.
|

A number of wreathes were laid and veterans paid their respect.
|

Towards the end of the service the Colour Party paraded from
the Cenotaph to the War Memorial in the garden at the side of
St Mary's Church.
|

Another wreath was laid at the foot of the Memorial Cross.
|

The following day, Remembrance Sunday, a service was held in
St Mary's in the presence of Civic dignitaries, veterans and
the general public.
|

After the service, the congregation processed out of the church
to join the hundreds that had already gathered on the Market
Place awaiting the arrival of the uniformed groups for the town's
Remembrance Day service.
|

Led by members of the Royal British Legion, the groups paraded
from the car park on South Street to assemble at the Cenotaph.
|

As the clock approached 11 o'clock, a light drizzle captured
the mood but in no way detracted from the solemn proceedings
and another impeccably observed time of silent reflection. It's
now well over 100 years since the end of the First Word War,
the so called "war to end all wars" - but still they
fight ....
