Ilkeston - Respect
w/e 11 September 2022
The photo of the
Queen was taken with a Kodak DX6490. All of the others were taken
with a Nikon D3300
This week saw the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and
Ilkeston began to show its respects. the image above is taken
from a photo I took when she visited Derby in 2010 to present
Maundy money in the Cathedral.
Almost immediately on hearing the news flags in neighbours gardens
- the Union Flag on the left and the Royal Standard on the right
- were flown at half mast.
|
On the Town Hall a single Union Flag was draped with a black
cravat, the tradition for this type of flagpole.
|
On the old Co-Op building the Union Flag there was also flying
at half mast framed here from this position on the Market Place
with two lighting columns like sentries on guard duty.
|
The flag on St Mary's likewise was also at half mast. Like churches
all over the country the bells were wrung on Saturday lunchtime
as a mark of respect.
|
In the adjacent Remembrance Garden an area was set aside for
floral tributes to be laid by members of the general public.
|
Shops too made their own tributes like this notice and vase of
flowers the greeted shoppers at Morrisons Supermarket.
|
Some shop window displays were simple like this one with just
a black dress, handbag and shoes and three flags.
|
Others were a little more elaborate and included many photos
of the Queen.
|
And another conveyed the thoughts of many with a single photo
and a simple message.
|
Some shops even closed their doors on Friday
but however the event was marked they all meant the same thing.
