Mapperley - A Walk Through The Village
w/e 22 August 2021

All of this week's pictures were taken with a Kodak DX6490

I have family roots in Mapperley and also friends who live there so it was not a surprise to be met with a cheery greeting from a former work colleague when we pulled up in the village centre. After spending a while catching up, exchanging news and reminiscing about the work place and the "good old days" we moved on towards the western edge of the village only to be haled by another friend from her garden. Again we spent a while chatting but eventually moved on to the end of the village.

The Limes

Here we turned and started our walk back into the village from just beyond a small cul-de-sac (on the left) called The Limes.

Recreation Ground

Just beyond The Limes is Mapperley's Recreation Ground, complete with training equipment, a football pitch and a play area for children as well as plenty of open space for other games.

Village Centre

Passing Mapperley Farm on the right we approached the village centre. In the far distance at the end of Main Street we could see the crossroads with Coronation Road straight ahead. We would soon reach there but first we took a detour to the left.

Manor Farm

We turned at a beautifully manicured garden into a Private Road and the entrance to Manor Farm and followed the track round behind the village pub.

Lodge Row

This brought us out onto Lodge Row where we waked by a row of cottages to the crossroads.

Primary School

It also brought us out onto Lodge Row opposite the Mapperley Church of England (VC) Primary School where the motto "Wisdom is worth more than gold" was displayed on the school name sign.
(VC stands for "Voluntary Controlled")

Coronation Road

We stopped at the crossroads and looked to the left along Coronation Road. The end of Coronation Road turns into a track called Slack Lane where access can be gained to Shipley Country Park. If we had turned left instead of right at the end of the Private Road, that would also have taken us on Shipley Lane past Mapperley Reservoir and into the Park.

Main Street

We also looked right at the crossroads along Main Street. When I took a photo of the building on the right in 2002 it was the Village Shop and Post Office but that closed more than fifteen years ago.

Footpath

We continued straight ahead into Mapperley Lane and walked as far as the church but with the trees in full leaf it was impossible to get a good view from this side. Opposite the lych gate is a footpath which leads to a track back to Main Street and that is the route we followed.

Old Black Horse

And that brought us out onto Main Street right opposite the village pub, the Old Black Horse.
