Ilkeston - Autumn On The Rec
w/e 01 November 2020
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Kodak DX6490
These pictures would look so much better with the
sun shining down from a clear blue sky but the autumn weather
meant they were taken on an overcast day, and there have been
many of them recently, with a hint of moisture in the atmosphere.
We're still trying to get out for a walk regularly in these COVID
restricted days and approached the Rutland Sports Park (The Rec)
along King George Avenue which gave us a good view along Oakwell
Drive from the entrance to the Ormiston Academy, the former Ilkeston
Grammar School.
|
We turned into West End Drive at the traffic lights and entered
The Rec where the path by the railings was ankle deep in fallen
leaves.
|
We passed the old pavilion, crossed the car park and continued
in front of the new pavilion.
|
Many of the leaves that had fallen here had accumulated on the
bank at the side of the path.
|
There were not many leaves left to fall from the trees bordering
the area to the right that was formerly a pitch and putt course
until it was sadly lost with the redevelopment of the sports
park.
|
The predominant colours were browns and yellows but there was
a splash of red at the end of the terracing.
|
Half of the terracing was lost with the development and replaced
with a tennis centre. Years ago the view from here would be dominated
by the tall cricket scoreboard and ticket office for the six
hole pitch and putt course, eighteen hole miniature putting course,
tennis courts and bowling green (see "This Sporting Life").
|
The bowling green has changed little over the years although
it is now within a fenced area but the green itself looks to
be in excellent condition.
|
As we approached the exit from The Rec, another tree still containing
a lot of leaves added a bright focal point on a dull day at the
edge of the children's play area.
|
We left The Rec and resumed our daily exercise along Oakwell
Drive.
