Belper - River Gardens
w/e 23 August 2020
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Kodak DX6490
We've been to the River Gardens at Belper several
times and usually entered from Matlock Road walking by the East
Mill. This time we approached from Bridge Foot and walked past
older North Mill to reach the gardens.
This way to the gardens leads along a walkway over some of the
sluice gates that controlled the flow of water that powered the
mills.
|
Once in the gardens we walked down the main path to the bandstand.
|
The Mill Leat to the right of the path is surrounded by lush
green vegetation.
|
And the view to the kiosk and the River Derwent on the left was
shared by a dog that wandered into the shot.
|
We walked round the bandstand pausing only to admire the hanging
baskets that surrounded it which also framed the distant East
Mill.
Continuing along the main path we reached the end where the former
tea room that have stood in a sorry state for quite a number
of years are now being replaced by this new building - coronavirus
permitting of course.
|
We turned left and returned towards the mills along the riverside
path passing the kiosk we had seen earlier from near the bandstand.
|
When we were level with the bandstand seen here over a small
pond and fountain, it was receiving a lot of attention from a
group of people armed with folders, clipboards and notepads.
I think they must have been either "In Bloom" or "Green
Flag" judges.
|
As we continued by the river there was a sudden commotion on
the water as two Canada Geese appeared to be having a disagreement.
|
Two more birds on a small island in the middle of the Derwent
were keeping well out if the way of the disagreement and seemed
more intent on the weir and Belper Bridge in the other direction.
|
Pigeons meanwhile had congregated on the roof of a shed near
the entrance to the gardens and they stayed there as we made
our way past, out of the gardens and back to Bridge Foot.
