Ilkeston - Armed Forties Day
w/e 30 June 2019
All of this week's pictures were taken with a Kodak DX6490

Saturday June 29th 2019 was Armed Forces Day. it was also the day that Erewash Museum held their ever popular Swing Back to the Forties event so, with a number of military vehicles and uniforms on display, it was in effect an Armed Forties Day.

High Street

High Street leading to the museum was closed for the day to allow some of the vehicles to be parked near the entrance gates.
Rose Marie

There were more vehicles within the museum's grounds and the Americans were here in force, this jeep bearing the name plate "Rose Marie".
American Forces

Re-enactors also added to the atmosphere and came dressed as American Forces.
Vintage Cars

Their English counterparts had a more sedate approach to the event and a number of Vintage Cars were on display. The forties clad gentleman with his "little boy" were surveying the car bottom left with its bonnet open whilst the pilot (a manikin) was positioned between more old vehicles (top left).

Forties Fashion

Forties fashion was evident everywhere and I believe some of these ladies and gentlemen were part of the Festival Swing Dance Society taking a break between their performances of the lawn.

There were however some dancers on the lawn strutting their stuff to wartime favourites as performed by Johnny Victory.
In The Shade

But on the hottest day of the year so far, many were just grateful to find a little shade to sit and enjoy the music. The Royal British Legion were also present and elsewhere a Tombola was being run by the Friends of the Erewash Museum and refreshments were on sale.
Various Displays

Inside the museum there was much more to be sampled and enjoyed. The Victorian kitchen had been transformed into a wartime kitchen with a display of various foodstuffs that were on ration whilst the Fifties shop had homemade sweets and cakes for sale. The Lally Gallery had a display of vintage clothes and other memorabilia whilst upstairs in the Hayloft there was display of model tanks plus a recreation of a bomber flying over a dam after dropping a bouncing bomb.
Model Ships

There were also model ships on display but these were outside in the museum grounds.
From A Window

The model ship display was just inside the garden and is seen here from a window in the museum. Fine weather is always a bonus at events like this and on this Armed Forces Day it ensured that Swinging Back to the Forties was yet another successful day in the calendar of events hosted by the Erewash Museum.
