Ilkeston - Work In Progress
w/e 04 September 2016
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Kodak DX6490
Motorists often complain that there are road works
or traffic lights wherever they go but at the moment in Ilkeston
there are also a number of major projects taking place that affect
pedestrians too.

Outside Toll Bar House a movable scaffold structure has been
at various positions at the front of the building.
|

The rear of the building too is shrouded with scaffolding. I
believe it's a major painting job on the window frames.
|

More scaffold was erected during the week near the bus stop on
South Street. I don't know what the Health and Safety Executive
would have made of this with no alternative route being provided
for pedestrians, pushchairs, prams, invalid carriages and the
like as they were forced into the road to pass the parked lorry.
|

A major seventeen week project to renew the water mains in the
Larklands area of the town has been ongoing for about a month
already and another bus stop on Heathfield Avenue has been temporarily
suspended.
|

Seen from Monks Close, Park Road is partially blocked by the
work making it extremely difficult to negotiate the corner. Whilst
the work to replace the original cast iron pipes is necessary,
it will mean continued disruption to traffic in the Larklands
area almost up to Christmas.
|

The renewal of the footbridge in conjunction with the Ilkeston
Station project has resulted in the closing of the existing bridge
and the creation of a temporary walkway on the narrow road bridge
which is now reduced to a single lane traffic light controlled
road. It is estimated the the work will take about fourteen weeks.
|

The platforms of the new station on the old Ilkeston Junction
Station site are still to be constructed but the station is due
to open before Christmas. The project has been beset with difficulties
including the discovery of a protected species of newt, potential
flooding and funding shortages so only time will tell whether
the opening date will be met.
|

The compound for the station works will eventually become the
car park.
|

A third major project, the restoration of the pergola and the
bandstand in Victoria Park plus the installation of new gates
has also not been without its difficulties but some progress
is being made. The pergola has been installed but is not accessible
yet as it is still surrounded by a metal fence.
|

Likewise fencing surrounds the base of the bandstand. The bandstand
was removed some weeks ago and is being refurbished off site
but is due to be returned and re-erected in the not too distant
future. The same applies to the new gates but workman are currently
on site working on the bowls pavilion. The images below give
details about all the Heritage Lottery funded work that is scheduled
to take place. From the dates on the notice though it can be
seen that some of the dates have passed but, like the other projects,
it is still a "Work In Progress".
