Ilkeston - The Community Hospital
w/e 03 August 2003
Ilkestonians of my generation will remember well that this building
on Heanor Road once housed the local hospital. In fact it is
still possible to make our the words "Ilkeston Hospital"
on its facade.
Nowadays the building is the Rutland Manor Nursing Home.
|
The hospital has now moved further up the road towards Heanor
into new premises. Parking there always comes at a premium and
this Saturday afternoon was no exception.
|
As staff and visitors chatted outside the main reception, the
Mayor of Erewash was opening a major fund raising event for the
hospital - the annual garden party.
|
On a beautiful, sunny summer afternoon, the local populace had
turned out in force to support the event.
|
Although funded by the National Health Service, the hospital
uses additional money raised by such events to improve its facilities
for the local community. One example of this is the refurbishment
of the reception area that also houses a plaque and portrait
commemorating the 1987 opening of the hospital by Her Royal Highness
The Princess of Wales.
|
Obviously not many people view the prospect of being in hospital
with much joy but this gentleman in the multicoloured coat who
was entertaining the crowds with glove puppets, a Punch and Judy
show and some magic tricks should contemplate booking himself
in for an operation next week - to get those chimneys removed
from his head!
