Ilkeston Cam on Holiday

Part 03 - Prince Consort Gardens
w/e 02 August 2026
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Nikon D3300 camera.
Our first excursion was a short trip to the higher
ground at the northern end of Weston Super Mare.

This took us to the Prince Consort Gardens, a small park sandwiched
between Upper Kewstoke Road on the higher side and Birkett Road
on the lower.
|

We entered the park from one of two entrances on Upper Kewstoke
Road and immediately noticed an attractive flower trough.
|

We followed the path straight down to a circular
pond.
|

Another path to the right of the pond pointed to a large crane
above Birnbeck Pier.
|

The pier which has stood derelict for several years and in a
hazardous condition is undergoing some extensive renovation work.
|

From this end of the park a path leads down to Birkett Road and
also overlooks the site of the associated ongoing pier works.
The promontory on the horizon at the southern end of Weston is
known as Brean Down. Beyond that, on the clear day, the coastline
of Somerset and North Devon is visible.
|

At the northern end of the park, access can also be gained from
Upper Kewstoke Road as well as Birkett Road. The views directly
across the Bristol Channel of course, are towards the Principality
of Wales and its capital Cardiff.
|

A small garden on the edge of the Prince Consort Gardens features
a small boat and is known as the Westcliffe Garden. This is designed
and maintained by residents of Westcliffe House, a residential
addiction rehabilitation centre.
|

Prince Consort Gardens was originally known as Flag Staff Hill
and a flag pole has always been a prominent feature. An aid to
the navigation of passing ships, the current flag pole, seen
here on the left, was installed in 2016.
|

At the southern end of the park,
a sign points the way to the Wildlife Area and that was our next
objective.
