Ilkeston Cam on Holiday

Part 04 - Headhunting
w/e 16 August 2026
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Nikon D3300 camera.
We knew before visiting Weston Super Mare's Prince
Consort Gardens that there were a number of small sculpted heads
hidden somewhere within its boundaries and one of the reasons
for our visit was to see if we could find them.

Having scoured the larger part of the park with no success we
headed for the smaller wildlife area which entailed going down
one flight of steps and up another. We later found another access
to the area via a sloping path so access is still possible to
any disabled visitors.
|

Before 2018 there was a small boating pond here but then the
area was converted to the wildlife area.
|

The boating pond which was underused became the wildlife
pond after the Friends of Prince Consort Gardens had raised over
£12,000 to enable the conversion of the area to take place.
|

The pond is now well stocked with plants like this water lily,
is visited by dragonflies and other insects and there might even
be a fish or two in there.
|

It is surrounded by a path and seats are placed at strategic
points to allow visitors to sit in seclusion to enjoy the peace.
|

If anyone sitting here though feels a little uncomfortable and
feels as though they are being watched they would be well advised
to turn and look behind them. For it is here that the small sculptured
heads have been included in the rocky walls.
|

And once you have seen one, others are soon discovered too.
|

The heads were created by artist Lynda Hayles and were intended
to be hidden for children to find but I can tell you they kept
four adults amused for about half an hour too.
|

The truth is once you have found one, you begin to see them everywhere.
|

We retraced our steps a little
back towards the stepped entrance to the wildlife area and spotted
more heads there that we had walked past without noticing just
a little earlier. I'm still wondering now we are back home whether
we actually found them all. I wouldn't be at all surprised if
we missed one or two.
