Ilkeston Cam on Holiday

Part 02 - More of Weston
w/e 26 July 2026
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Nikon D3300 camera.
After a visit to a park at the north end of Weston
(more of that later) on our first full day in the town we returned
and parked in The Sovereign Shopping Centre.

We left the Centre through a grand entrance between these pillars
into a large open square. Again this is something we didn't recollect
from our previous visit to Weston but that is hardly surprising
as it was part of a redevelopment scheme that began in 2017.
|

The £2.48 million included a revamp of the Italian Gardens
funded by a grant from the West of England Local Enterprise partnership.
|

We left the Italian Gardens and turned into High
Street, a pedestrianised street with many familiar shops.
|

At the end of High Street in Regent Street there is a piece of
public art called Silica, or more commonly known as The Spire.
It was here that a strange encounter took place. Whilst taking
the photo on the left above, a young lady approached me and asked
indignantly "Did you just take my photo?" "No"
I replied, "Did you want me to?" She replied in the
affirmative and then posed with her companion as I took the photo
on the right. Before I could say anything else, they turned and
hurried off. I don't know whether she was a resident or a visitor
to Weston but if she ever searches the internet she might just
see her photo.
|

On one of our evening walks, the tide was out again and there
were only a couple of people on the almost deserted beach.
|

It
was on one of these walks that we noticed lines of poetry or
quotes on some of the windows in the shelters along the sea front.
Here are just a couple.
Above - If I were a Seagull like the one in the book
I would fly all over the world and perch in the highest places
To look at the beautiful vista, just because I could.
Left - Hot white sand, summer laughter
The sea, cool as winter trees
Evergreen our memories.
|

Hardly anyone on the beach but there were a couple of kitesurfers
skimming over the waves.
|

And one man and his dog was getting a much closer view.
|

Evidence of activity earlier in the day with a sandcastle or
recreation of a stone circle was close to the sea wall but ripples
in the sand indicated that the tide would probably obliterate
it later.
|

With the sun setting over Knightstone
Island another evening walk was almost at an end but it was beyond
that part of Weston on the higher ground that we had spent an
hour or so in that park I mentioned earlier on our first full
day in the town. And it's there that we'll continue in the next
part.
