The English Riviera

All of this week's pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300 or a Galaxy S20 Mobile Phone.

Part 01 - Paignton

At the beginning of July 2024 we had a few days away on the English Riviera in Torbay. We were based in Paignton but also visited a few places in the surrounding area.

Standstill on the M5

We'd estimated our journey to Paignton to take about five hours allowing for stops for our traditional second breakfast and also a lunch break. What we hadn't allowed for was a "police incident" plus accidents on the M5 near Bristol which caused the closure of part of the motorway. After leaving the motorway at the first opportunity, the diversion took us through the narrow lanes of Somerset which were also busy with late departures from the Glastonbury Festival so our actual journey time was almost doubled.
Balcony

We arrived at our apartment in the late afternoon, unloaded our luggage and took in the view from our bedroom window. There are far worse places to wake up to every morning.
Roundham Head

From the balcony the views were outstanding from the rocky cliff face of Roundham Head on the left ....
Torbay

Goodrington Sands

Goodrington Park

At Sunset

It was equally impressive as the lights came on as the sun began to set.
Paignton

The next day we headed into Paignton for a leisurely walk along the main street lined with a mixture of national chain stores and local independent shops and tourist attractions.
Railway Station

A familiar sight to anyone visiting Paignton will be the railway station right in the middle of the town. Steam trains also run from here to Kingswear and although we didn't see one this year we did hear them and see smoke rising above the trees several times as they passed close to our accommodation in Goodrington.
Level Crossing

The level crossing gates opened and closed several times too whilst we were in the vicinity but eventually we crossed the lines to walk down to the sea front.
