Well Dressing Festival 2000
Detail of a Panel

This page was updated on 10 July 2005

This closer view of one of the well dressings shows some of the detail in each panel and the even closer image below reveals how much patience and painstaking work is required to produce these unique works of art. Well dressing is a custom that the people of Derbyshire are justifyably proud. The most famous well dressings are those of Tissington and other Peak District villages but the custom has now spread right across the county and even across the borders into some of the neighbouring counties. Neither is it confined these days to the villages alone. Towns and even the city of Derby now hold annual celebrations. Long may it continue.
