Ilkeston Cam On Holiday
In South West Wales - Part Eight
Haverfordwest
The
photos on this page were taken on Monday 15th July
If the county
town of Derbyshire is Derby and that of Nottinghamshire is Nottingham,
you would expect that Pembrokeshire's to be Pembroke. And that
is where you would be wrong - as I was - for that aforementioned
honour lies with Haverfordwest.
|
Our return
journey from Lower Fishguard (see parts Six and Seven) gave us
time for a fleeting visit and to take a few photos down by the
River Cleddau. This red and black footbridge crosses the river
and gives access to a newly-developed shopping complex.
|
From the footbridge
it is possible to see two much older road bridges that cross
the river in the town. This is one of them framed between the
shopping complex on the right and the market hall and outdoor
restaurant that can be seen overhanging the river on the left.
|
In the opposite
direction, the other bridge carries traffic into the heart of
Haverfordwest between a new development on the left and the much
older buildings alongside the Cleddau on the right.
|
From down
on the river bank and behind one of those older building, "Minnies",
the impressive ruins from a much, much earlier period can be
seen. These belong to the town's 12th century Norman castle.
|
Before continuing
our journey there was just time to walk by the river for a closer
look at this blue building at the foot of High Street.
