Ilkeston - Good Friday

Ilkeston's annual Walk of Witness on Good Friday this year started
in St Andrew's Church on Wilmot Street where members of Ilkeston's
churches gathered ready for the walk to begin at 10 o'clock.
|

Building work is in progress at St Andrew's but negotiating the
scaffolding, the walkers left the church to assemble behind a
simple wooden cross on Wilmot Street.
|

Despite it being a pedestrian zone, it was necessary to stop
a car as the walkers left Wilmot Street to enter Bath Street.
|

The walkers then began a slow and steady walk up Bath Street
where shoppers were offered free hot cross buns.
|

Walking in silence the procession soon reached the Lower Market
Place despite the slow pace.
|

A sign outside the Market Inn advertised an "Easter Bonanza"
with events over the Easter weekend but the walkers turned into
the Market Place.
|

Last year the walk was from St Mary's to St Andrew's but this
year the route was reversed and the destination was St Mary's.
|

Still following the cross the walkers passed through the gates
and entered the church.
|

A short service followed with a selection of Easter hymns which
included "When I Survey", "From Heaven You Came"
and "There Is A Green Hill".
|

The hymns were interspersed with Bible readings, a reflection
and prayers and as the Witness concluded, refreshments were served
in the Cantelupe Centre. The Ilkeston Churches met again at 6:30am
on Easter Sunday morning for a dawn service under the Dale Abbey
Arch before separating to continue their Easter devotions in
their own churches.
