Ilkeston - Friday Night, Saturday Morning
w/e 28 November 2021
All of this week's pictures were taken with a Kodak DX6490
Friday was the day Ilkeston's Christmas lights were switched
on and the Erewash Museum opened their doors after dark for a
"Light Night" event. As we entered the grounds a Victorian
street scene in front of the museum shone through the darkness.
|
The inside of the museum had also been decorated alongside the
exhibits. The old kitchen had a tableau depicting children hanging
their stockings whilst in the stables a Christmas tree stood
in one corner and a large chair on the left proved irresistible
for parents to take souvenir photos of their children.
|
We made our way from museum to St Mary's Church and the Cantelupe
Centre where a Charity Craft Fair was being held.
|
Many different crafts were on display highlighting the incredible
different abilities and skills of the contributors.
|
And some of them had really entered into the spirit of the season
by donning fancy dress.
|
We left the building just before seven o'clock and just in time
to join the crowds to witness the switching on of the lights
ceremony in front of the Town Hall.
|
Entertainment had been provided by Gary Barlow and Michael Bublé
tribute singers and Ilkeston Brass also played at the event.
|
Santa Claus put in an appearance to the delight of all the children
waiting outside the Town Hall.
|
A small funfair had been erected on the Market Place to add to
the entertainment but had gone by Saturday morning. The lights
on the Christmas tree will remain throughout the next month though
- weather permitting!
|
Overnight and on
Saturday Storm Arwen blew through the town and this was the scene
that greeted us on Saturday morning. The roads and pavements
were covered with snow but the precipitation soon turned to rain
and although it remained cold all day, the white covering soon
disappeared - but it did come back on Sunday. Welcome to the
Festive Season!
A consequence of the storm was that the wind had shifted the
greenhouse a good six inches off its base, blown out a back panel
and taken the door off too. Thankfully the panels are made of
polycarbonate but it means we need to get some more clips to
fix them back into the frame.
