Ilkeston - A Quiet Saturday
w/e 22 December 2019
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Kodak DX6490
On the Saturday morning before Christmas I expected
the town centre to be busy as the roads all around were thronged
with traffic. That was not the case though!
Shopkeepers and market traders would have been disappointed to
see so few shoppers about. This was the view down the sparsely
populated Bath Street.
|
Despite the flashing lights and miniature Christmas trees in
the raised beds, it was the same story in the Albion Centre.
|
Even the sound of Ilkeston Brass playing traditional Christmas
Carols had failed to attract a large audience.
|
Not only were shoppers in short supply but there were fewer market
traders than usual and only about half as many on the Lower Market.
Compare with the image below.
This was the scene from a similar
position on the equivalent day in 2002.
|
The picture was a little better on the top market with lots of
festive goods for sale like these Christmas themed T-shirts.
|
Plenty of decorated holly wreaths were available too.
|
I suppose these are what are known as Christmas cacti.
|
Signs read "Santa Stop Here" but customers would be
welcome too.
|
Slippers are a traditional Christmas gift and they could be purchased
too on the market but the traders who has been selling Christmas
jumpers was conspicuous by his absence.
|
But if you still want a bird for Christmas they were in plentiful
supply. So Saturday morning was a quiet day which probably means
everyone has already done their shopping for Christmas or it's
going to be manic on Monday and Tuesday. Happy Christmas everyone!
