Ilkeston - Christmas Comes To South Street
w/e 08 December 2019
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Kodak DX6490
Traders all over town (and beyond) have entered into
the festive spirit and decorated their premises both inside and
out to tempt customers over their thresholds. Whilst many of
these displays are secular in nature they all pour light onto
the dimly lit streets and thus contribute to the Christian celebrations
of Advent and Christmas and add to the Festival of Light that
is prevalent in many religions. Scenes like this selection below
can be seen in numerous places but these are all from South Street
in Ilkeston.
Earls Hair and Beauty has decorations in both windows.
|
It may or may not be a White Christmas but the white dress in
the Wedding Boutique is surrounded by Christmas decorations.
|
Next door to the Wedding Boutique, the Spanish Bar have gone
to town with three trees and lots of twinkling lights.
|
Stacey's too have also decorated the outside of their shop and
have a tree and figures in their windows.
|
The Lighthouse Charity Shop windows are full of ideas for present
as well as the decorations and this is one shop that does have
a traditional Nativity scene on display.
|
The Worx has also gone traditional with a Christmas Tree front
and centre whilst Tudor Jewellers next done have adopted a snowflake
theme in their window display.
|
Across the road another charity shop, Treetops Hospice, has a
full size manikin sitting among their decorations.
|
Hogarth's Gin Palace brightens the street with flashing blue
lights in its windows. This building has served several purposes
in recent years ranging from from a Building Society to a restaurant
but back in the 1960s this is where, whilst still a schoolboy,
I had temporary employment over the Christmas period when it
was the town's main Post Office.
|
The old Co-Op buildings opposite Hogarth's right up to Wharncliffe
Road have now been redeveloped and the former main entrance to
the Co-Op store now provides access to Harmony Care and Support
although not always with a polar bear inside and Santa transfers
on the doors.
|
Also in the old Co-Op building is the Discount Party Outlet and
its windows are full of inflatable figures and inside there's
probably everything you'd need for a party during the festive
season.
