Ilkeston - It's Beginning To Look A Lot ....
w/e 01 December 2019
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Kodak DX6490
With Advent still a couple of days away and December 25th almost
a month into the future, Ilkeston was already beginning to look
a lot like Christmas on Friday November 29th. Decorations had
been strung across the streets, shop windows were full of seasonal
displays and on the Market Place, fairground rides and entertainments
were being set up.
|
A Christmas tree had been installed at the side of the Cenotaph.
|
As night fell entertainment began on the Market Place with music
and street entertainers and at 7:00pm the lights were switched
on by the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Sue Beardsley.
|
Switching on of the lights signalled the start of a firework
display that erupted from the top of the Town Hall.
|
Santa made an appearance on the Town Hall balcony and then came
down to give sweets to the children.
|
Among the street entertainers one of Santa's elves was creating
giant size soap bubbles that children took great delight in popping.
|
On the Lower Market Place along the wall of the floodlit St Mary's,
a row of charity stalls were raising money for various good causes.
|
The Ilkeston Methodist stall had a manger scene with a sign inviting
people to pose alongside to take photos and I arrived there at
the same time as the Mayor.
|
The twinkling lights on the Town Hall and the trees in the Market
Place will remain now throughout December (and maybe even longer)
but the fairground stall and rides were there for one night only.
|
And as for the tree by the Cenotaph - well it looks so much better
now that the lights are on. Yes it's beginning to look a lot
like Christmas.
