Ilkeston - The Week Before Christmas
w/e 18 December 2016
All of this week's pictures were
taken with a Kodak DX6490
In 2013 I prefaced the images for this corresponding
week with:
'Twas the week before Christmas and I thought it the time
To add captions of couplets with each pair in rhyme.
To illustrate each image below,
I thought would be easy to give it a go.
But as I began I soon realised,
That I couldn't think of a suitable rhyme for realised
Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) wrote the poem
A Visit from St. Nicholas" which begins 'Twas the
night before Christmas and I was hoping to use that a basis for
a number of rhyming couplets each one illustrated with a photo
but as you can see, that didn't happen. Now three years later
I've given it another go with assistance from my wife Sandra
and son Adam. So with apologies to Clament Clarke Moore, here's
what we came up with.

It's the week before Christmas, and all through the town
Lights are strung across roads, and colours shine down.
|

It wouldn't be Christmas without having a tree
So there's one on the market for all people to see.
|

Shop windows are full of all manner of treats,
Prominent among them are boxes of sweets.
|

The florists are happy and people so jolly
When buying their flowers and wreaths made of holly.
|

Cakes and pastries and lots of mince pies
A feast for the stomach as well as the eyes.
|

If you like brussels sprouts you're on to a winner
There's plenty of food for a traditional dinner.
|

Some people don't like them I know that is so
But I'd rather have Brussels than three feet of snow.
|

From the tower of St Mary's the church bells were rung
As music was played and carols were sung.
|

Old Santa Claus paid the museum a call
Where he was heard to exclaim, "Merry Christmas to all."
|

There's a seasonal greeting on the town hall to see,
So as the sign says, "Season's Greetings" from me!
