Derby - Markets And More
w/e 13 December 2015
All of this week's pictures were taken with a Kodak DX6490

In search of a couple of things we need for Christmas, we took a ride into Derby and walked through the city centre taking in both the Indoor Market Hall and the Eagle Market in the Intu Centre plus one or two more places on the way.

Bus Station

We arrived in the bus station and found a series of silver balls hanging from the ceiling which I took to be part of the city's Christmas decorations.
Guildhall

Making our way to the Market Place we approached the Indoor Market through the passage under the Guildhall which was tastefully lit with hundreds of tiny white lights.
Seasonal Display

Like many towns and cities the Indoor Market has been hit by austerity and several stalls stand empty. A seasonal display though complete with giant Santa figure and Christmas tree should help to attract shoppers to the market.
Nativity Scene

Another attraction in the Indoor Market is a Nativity scene which occupies one of the market stalls vacated by a trader.
Market Hall

Despite austerity many traders still continue to operate in the market as this image shows and all of the stalls have been decorated with festive lights.
Ho Ho Ho

On leaving the Indoor Market, even a stall once occupied by a butcher although now standing empty, still had a cheery "Ho Ho Ho" for everyone using this access.
Hanging About

In any town or city it's not unusual to see people hanging about but this character on East Street seemed to be taking it to the extreme. He was friendly enough though and high-fived me as we walked past towards the church on St Peter's Street.
At St Peter's Church

At St Peter's Church a simple but effective conical tree stood behind a sign on the wall advising that charity Christmas cards were on sale inside.
Eagle Market

Like the Indoor Market we found some empty stalls in the Eagle Market but in the middle we also found a much larger tree than the one at St Peter's standing next to a log cabin.
Santa's Grotto

The cabin was labelled Santa's Grotto but Santa was not in residence at the time we were there. Instead several effigies in his place were scattered among the smaller trees surrounding the cabin but we didn't need to meet him - we hope we're on his "Good" list and will eagerly await his visitation on the 25th (fingers crossed!)
