Council of Churches Good Friday Witness that took place in and
around the Market Place on March 25th 2005.
The next day the large crowd
that had come to the Passover Festival heard that Jesus was coming
to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm-trees and went out
to meet him, shouting, "Praise God! God bless him who comes
in the name of the Lord! God bless the King of Israel!"
John 12. 12-13

Jesus went into the Temple and drove out all those who were buying
and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money-changers
and the stools of those who sold pigeons, and said to them, "It
is written in the Scriptures that God said, 'My Temple will be
called a house of prayer.' But you are making it a hideout for
thieves!"
Matthew 21. 12-13

Jesus and his disciples were at supper. Then he poured some water
into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them
with the towel round his waist.
John 13. 1 & 5
When it was evening, Jesus and the twelve disciples sat down
to eat. During the meal Jesus said, "I tell you, one of
you will betray me." Then they sang a hymn and went out
to the Mount of Olives.
Matthew 26. 20-21, 30

They came to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his
disciples, "Sit here while I pray." He went away a
little further on ... and prayed. Then he returned and found
the three disciples asleep. He went away once more and prayed
saying the same words. When he came back the third time he said
to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The
hour has come! Look, the Son of Man is now being handed over
to the power of sinful men. Get up, here is the man who is betraying
me!"

When day came, the elders, the
chief priests, and the teachers of the Law met together, and
Jesus was brought before the Council. They all said, "Are
you, then, the Son of God?" He answered them, "You
say that I am." And they said, "We don't need any witnesses!
We ourselves have heard what he said!"
Luke 22. 66, 70-71

The whole group rose up and took Jesus before Pilate.
Luke 23. 1
Then Pilate went back outside to the people and said to them,
"I cannot find any reason to condemn him. But according
to the custom you have, I always set free a prisoner for you
during the Passover. Do you want me to set free for you the King
of the Jews?" They answered him with a shout, "No,
not him! We want Barabbas!" (Barabbas was a bandit.)
John 18. 38-40

The soldiers took Jesus inside to the courtyard of the governor's
palace and called together the rest of the company. They put
a purple robe on Jesus, made a crown of thorny branches and put
it on his head.
Mark 15. 16-17

He went out, carrying his cross and came to "The Place of
the Skull," as it is called. (In Hebrew it is called "Golgotha.")
John 19. 21 On the way they met a man named Simon, who
was coming into the city from the country, and the soldiers forced
him to carry Jesus' cross.

Then they crucified him and divided his clothes among themselves,
throwing dice to see who would get which piece of clothing. It
was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. The
notice of the accusation against him said; "The King of
the Jews." They also crucified two bandits with Jesus, one
on his right and the other on his left.
Mark 15. 24-28

Jesus knew that by now everything had been completed; and in
order to make the scripture come true, he said, "I am thirsty."
A bowl was there, full of cheap wine; so a sponge was soaked
in the wine , put on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted to his lips.
Jesus drank the wine and said, "It is finished!" Then
he bowed his head and died.
John 19. 28-29
The army officer who was standing there in front of the cross
saw how Jesus had died. "This man was really the Son of
God!" he said.
Mark 15. 39
After the Sabbath, as Sunday morning was dawning, Mary Magdalene
and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. Suddenly there was
a violent earthquake; an angel of the Lord came down from heaven,
rolled away the stone, and sat on it.
Matthew 28. 1-2
The angel spoke to the women.
"You must not be afraid," he said. "I know you
are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he
has been raised, just as he said." So they left the tomb
in a hurry, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
Suddenly Jesus met them and said, "Peace be with you."
They came up to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him.
"Do not be afraid," Jesus said to them. "Go and
tell my brothers."

Jesus Christ Is Risen
